Why it was built
Ever Given was completed in 2018 with a reported 20,124 TEU nominal capacity and a length of exactly 400 metres. That length is close to a practical ceiling for containerships: going longer brings diminishing port and canal advantages, so the effective record race has been about carrying more boxes within a similar hull envelope.
In March 2021 the ship ran aground in the Suez Canal, blocking the waterway for about six days. The event drew extraordinary attention to how dependent global supply chains are on a single narrow passage, and it permanently attached the 2018 hull to an incident years into its service. The ship was refloated in late March 2021.
Ever Given’s 58.8-metre beam and draught matter as much as its 400-metre length when considering where it can operate. The canal-fit tool compares length and beam against the stated envelopes of Panama, Suez and Malacca, and makes clear the difference between what fits on paper and what an authority will clear on the day.
Length measures the vessel from end to end. Gross tonnage measures enclosed volume, not weight. Historical GRT is excluded from the GT ranking. Published figures can differ by configuration and measurement precision.
