Built for a purpose
- Builder / location
- Samsung Heavy Industries, Geoje, South Korea
- Original role
- Ultra-large Asia–Europe container transport
Why it was built
HMM Algeciras took delivery in 2020 as the then-largest container vessel, with a reported nominal capacity of 23,964 TEU. South Korean operator HMM used the ship to restructure its long-haul Asia–Europe services around a smaller number of very large, highly utilised ships rather than many mid-sized ones.

Built at Geoje
Samsung Heavy Industries completed the hull at its Geoje yard in South Korea. The choice places the ship inside the same heavy-industry network that builds many of the directory’s largest container vessels. The Geoje yards and Korean shipbuilding capability are covered separately in the shipbuilding guide.

Capacity, beam and real cargo
A nominal 23,964 TEU describes available slots, not the boxes on any particular sailing; weight limits, port restrictions and stowage rules lower practical loads. At 61 metres beam, the ship is also among the widest in the directory and near the practical beam ceiling for Suez transit. Its length of 399.9 m matters, but so does everything else the profile records.
