Built for a purpose
- Builder / location
- Samsung Heavy Industries, South Korea
- Original role
- High-capacity Asia–Europe container transport
Why it was built
MSC Gülsün increased container capacity without moving far beyond the roughly 400 metre length common to the largest boxships. MSC reported a nominal 23,756 TEU capacity when the vessel completed its first Asia–Europe voyage in 2019. Its width and cargo arrangement are therefore as important as its length.
The cargo system behind the record
MacGregor, the cargo-system supplier, describes a design with containers arranged 24 across and identifies Samsung Heavy Industries as the delivery yard in July 2019. A capacity increase requires compatible securing equipment and loading arrangements, not just additional steel volume.
Where it travelled
The operator’s first-voyage report documents a service connecting Asia with Europe. These long-distance trades can fill large vessels by collecting cargo at hub ports and distributing it through a wider network. TEU remains a nominal slot measure: the actual cargo aboard depends on weight, container sizes, stowage constraints and the booked voyage.
