Why it was built
MSC Irina represents the drive to carry more containers within an approximately 400 metre vessel. Its published capacity is 24,346 TEU. Port operator Adani describes its role as transporting large volumes between Asia and Europe, a trade where terminal capability and cargo consolidation help determine whether a ship of this scale is useful.

A documented Indian port call
On 9 June 2025 the ship called at Vizhinjam in Kerala. The port operator presented the visit as evidence that its new deep-water terminal could handle ultra-large container vessels. This is a dated historical call, not a current map position or an assertion that every voyage follows that route.

What to compare
Irina’s container capacity is not a measure of the weight of the ship or of a particular cargo. Compare TEU with other container vessels and gross tonnage with enclosed volume.
