Why it was built
Queen Mary 2 was ordered for Cunard to renew the tradition of large transatlantic liners. The shipyard records the contract in November 2000. Its role is a useful contrast with resort-oriented cruise ships: an ocean crossing between continents is central to the vessel’s identity, not simply the time between holiday ports.
Saint-Nazaire had already built famous Atlantic liners including Normandie and France. Queen Mary 2 connected that earlier history with a new generation of passenger-ship construction. The hull, passenger spaces and machinery had to form a coherent vessel rather than a collection of impressive headline dimensions.
Queen Mary 2 is long even alongside many larger-volume cruise ships. That illustrates why a gross-tonnage ranking and a length ranking produce different results.
