Built for a purpose
- Builder / location
- Chantiers de l’Atlantique, Saint-Nazaire, France
- Original role
- Oasis-class cruising from Port Canaveral
Why it was built
Utopia of the Seas continues the Oasis-family idea of arranging a very large ship around distinct neighbourhoods. Royal Caribbean positioned it for short Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral in Florida, a market that rewards large public areas and intense use rather than a long ocean passage. The hull was completed at Saint-Nazaire in 2024 with a reported 236,473 GT.

A French build for a Florida programme
Chantiers de l’Atlantique has long built cruise hulls for this scale. Delivery to Royal Caribbean and assignment to Florida itineraries are separate steps from construction: the 2024 delivery and home port belong to the operator’s deployment history. The Saint-Nazaire yard, meanwhile, remains the place where the hull and its machinery were assembled.

Reading its size
At 361.12 metres long it is far from the longest vessel in the directory, yet its enclosed volume places it among the largest cruise ships. That contrast is exactly why this site keeps length and gross tonnage in separate rankings: a hull built around passenger volume can be shorter than a tanker while enclosing far more space. Measurements come from referenced sources, not a single headline number.
